Chapter 23: A Love Rival? Or a Childhood Friend?

After clearing up the misunderstanding, an awkward atmosphere lingered between the two. Neither wanted to admit they had been petty, and both felt too embarrassed to apologize directly.

After all, as newlyweds, they still needed time to adjust to each other.

Cheng Tian, who had been observing from the sidelines, understood the situation perfectly. She realized the couple needed some privacy to talk things out. With a knowing look at the housekeeper, she promptly announced they were going out to buy groceries. “It’s a rare day off. You two should rest a bit longer.”

The twins obediently followed along without complaint.

“Um…” Both men spoke simultaneously.

Bai Yucheng turned away, his face flushed. He muttered, “You go first.”

Song Yan also felt awkward. He cleared his throat softly and said, “Yucheng, I’m sorry about earlier. It was my fault.”

“I… I was wrong, too,” Bai Yucheng said, head lowered. “I shouldn’t have… lost my temper like that. Now that we’ve settled on our daughter’s name, let’s… not be upset about this anymore.”

Hearing Bai Yucheng take the initiative, Song Yan felt a wave of gratitude. “How about this… when they’re older, we let them choose for themselves. Is that okay?”

“Choose for themselves?” Bai Yucheng looked up, confused. “How would that work?”

“We’ll let them decide.”

“By then, they’ll be used to their names.” Bai Yucheng chuckled. “That’s silly.”

Song Yan laughed, too. “Not at all.”

The strange atmosphere finally dissipated as they chatted about the children, bringing them a bit closer. However, Song Yan still wondered why Bai Yucheng wouldn’t say he liked him.

He realized his mother was right – he needed to properly court his own wife.

The family of four finally gave everyone some peace of mind. That night, they ate dinner and went to bed harmoniously, much to the relief of the elder.

The company’s annual party approached quickly, keeping both Song Yan and Bai Yucheng busy. Lin Mei and Bai Li had also returned, primarily to see their grandchildren. The Song family home was spacious, with plenty of rooms for everyone.

However, at the company party, Bai Yucheng’s childhood friend made an appearance. Though it was called a party, several high-level executives from other companies had been invited as well.

This childhood friend, Luo Chengyi, was among them. He was a director at an advertising company who also took on film projects. This time, He came with the intention of shooting a movie about gemstones.

It could be regarded as a special invitation for collaboration.

The guest list from partners was arranged by Huang Ling, so Bai Yucheng was somewhat surprised to see him.

Luo Chengyi was only a Beta. He had heard about Bai Yucheng’s differentiation while abroad and regretted missing the chance to help. Now, upon meeting again, Bai Yucheng was already married.

As soon as Song Yan arrived, he proudly introduced Bai Yucheng as both his wife and capable assistant. He looked so proud, with Bai Yucheng constantly by his side.

When a moment presented itself, Luo Chengyi approached Bai Yucheng to exchange greetings. Noticing the ring on his finger, he felt uncomfortable. “I never expected you to marry so quickly.”

Bai Yucheng nodded slightly. “To be honest, neither did I.”

“Yucheng, I’m sorry. When you needed me most, I…”

“It’s in the past,” he looked up at Luo Chengyi. “Song Yan and I have two children now.”

Hearing this, Luo Chengyi chuckled softly. “The twins, right? I saw their photos at his father’s place. Both children have your beautiful eyes.”

“Mm, though I feel they resemble Song Yan more.”

Bai Yucheng said this with a smile, recalling how the three of them looked identical when sleeping together these past few days. He found it rather endearing.

Luo Chengyi didn’t pursue the topic further. “I thought you’d continue as a designer. I still have the designs you drew for me.”

“I can’t be a designer anymore.”

Mentioning this, Bai Yucheng’s mood visibly dampened. Luo Chengyi understood him well; since childhood, his dream had been to become a jewelry designer.

He had naively believed everyone should have a gemstone suited to them.

But he truly had talent, mastering every technique quickly. Even in school, design companies sought him out. To give that up now, how could there not be regret and disappointment?

“It’s because of your differentiation, right? There are medications that can help now.” Luo Chengyi offered his business card. “If you need anything, I can introduce you.”

Bai Yucheng didn’t take it, merely saying coolly, “I’m just Song Yan’s assistant now.”

Luo Chengyi stepped closer, speaking softly, “Yucheng, I feel such a waste…”

“Excuse me, what business do you have with my wife?”

Song Yan suddenly appeared behind them, his expression polite but his voice cold. Luo Chengyi was quite handsome himself, not falling short when standing next to Song Yan.

“Just saying hello,” Luo Chengyi put away his card, smiling. “I didn’t expect Mr. Song to come over so quickly.”

Bai Yucheng tugged at Song Yan’s clothes, then turned to Luo Chengyi. “I’ve been feeling unwell lately. We had already planned to leave early. The children are waiting at home, too.”

“Please excuse us,” Song Yan nodded politely.

Once outside, Bai Yucheng sighed in relief. His head felt dizzy. It must have been the alcohol making him uncomfortable. “Let’s go home.”

Song Yan opened the car door, helping him in. “You should have left the socializing to me.”

“It’s nothing. I couldn’t let you lose face,” Bai Yucheng glanced at him. “Let’s hurry home. I miss the children.”

“I wanted to ask, you’ve known that man for a while?”

Bai Yucheng didn’t intend to hide anything. He just sighed, “A former neighbor.”

“Just a neighbor?” He held Bai Yucheng’s hand. “He seemed to know you well.”

“We went to school together since childhood. Of course, he knows quite a bit.”

“Then, what he said about improving, was that about your condition?” Song Yan was concerned about this, too.

Bai Yucheng wasn’t bothered. “It’s just about touch sensitivity. Because I presented late, my sense of touch became very sensitive. I… can’t be a designer anymore.”

Song Yan had heard a bit from Lin Mei but never discussed it with Bai Yucheng directly.

Hearing it now felt strange.

“Do you… want to try that medication?”

Seeing Song Yan’s strained question, Bai Yucheng couldn’t help but laugh.

“You’re silly. Aren’t I your assistant now?”
