Shen Nianjing stood frozen in shock, his mind completely blank.

He saw Su Zhiyan with eyes closed, a faint blush spreading near his ears. He didn’t know if it was from being angry just now or because of… this kiss.

His lips were so soft… even softer than Shen Nianjing had imagined.

Their lips touched simply, their heated breaths mingling between them. Shen Nianjing felt like he was floating on clouds, his face burning hot like boiling steam.

    Su Zhiyan kissed him.

    He was kissing Su Zhiyan!

This realization kept expanding in Shen Nianjing’s mind until it occupied his entire consciousness with crystal clarity.

His eyes darkened as he pulled Su Zhiyan closer by the waist, then tilted his chin up with his right hand to deepen the kiss while Su Zhiyan stared at him in shock.

When their tongues met, Su Zhiyan’s scalp immediately went numb.

He was trapped in Shen Nianjing’s arms. He was just over 180cm tall, almost a head shorter than Shen Nianjing, so he had to tilt his head back and let himself be held down for the deep kiss.

Shen Nianjing’s tongue lightly touched his, clearly being careful and testing at first, but the next second he invaded without warning, tangling and sucking.

    “Mm…”

Su Zhiyan trembled as electric pleasure shot through him from the base of his tongue.

So this is what kissing feels like.

    It’s different from my dreams.

But it feels better than in my dreams.

“Mmph!” Su Zhiyan gasped as Shen Nianjing pulled him flush against his body.

He wrapped his arms around Shen Nianjing’s neck, tilting his head back to take everything.

How strange. One moment they were fighting, and the next second they were kissing passionately.

Love really moves in mysterious ways. Emotions don’t make any sense at all.

No using each other, no hesitation, no struggling or suspicion. Just purely, completely following instinct to break through all barriers. It was more natural than scanning a QR code to get on the bus.

Su Zhiyan’s heart melted completely. He felt like he was about to melt into Shen Nianjing.

He gasped for air between kisses, hearing Shen Nianjing’s breathing getting heavier and heavier.

He felt his waist being rubbed and touched. Shen Nianjing’s hands had already gone under his coat to the thin sweater underneath.

“Why are you wearing so little…” he asked in a low voice, his voice rough and deep.

Su Zhiyan looked up and met Shen Nianjing’s lowered eyes.

He breathed lightly, their noses touching. “The classroom isn’t cold.”

Then Shen Nianjing opened his big down jacket and wrapped Su Zhiyan completely inside it.

He lowered his head to Su Zhiyan’s shoulder, nuzzling against the side of Su Zhiyan’s neck. “I’m so happy… it’s like being in a dream.”

His warm breath hit the side of Su Zhiyan’s face when he spoke, his deep and seductive voice going straight into his ears. Su Zhiyan’s face turned slightly red.

It really was just like in a dream.

Thinking about this, his tone got awkward. “You still have the nerve to talk about your dreams.”

“Didn’t you say I killed you?” He put his hands on Shen Nianjing’s stomach, trying to push him away. “Let me go.”

    “No!”

Shen Nianjing held Su Zhiyan tightly, their hips pressed close together, intimate and passionate.

His gaze fell on Su Zhiyan’s face, gentle and full of longing. He lowered his head to lightly kiss the corner of Su Zhiyan’s lips, their noses bumping again and again. He had no intention of letting go at all.

After their breath tangled for a while, nobody knew who started it, but they began kissing again.

This time wasn’t rushed and passionate like before. Instead it was gentle and tender, incredibly loving.

Shen Nianjing’s hands rubbed and touched Su Zhiyan’s waist. His Adam’s apple moved up and down as he swallowed, completely lost in this kiss.

The intimate kissing sounds came and went. Su Zhiyan couldn’t help but go weak all over, his ears going soft.

“We should go back…” he mumbled. “It’s been a long time already.”

But as soon as he pulled back a little, those burning lips pressed against his again for another kiss.

Shen Nianjing laughed softly. “Are you hungry?”

His laugh was too seductive. Su Zhiyan couldn’t help but turn his head away. “Look who’s talking.”

    “We missed lunch.”

Shen Nianjing’s fingertips rubbed against his red, slightly swollen lips, then gave them one last lingering kiss.

    “Okay, let’s go eat.”

“Let’s go outside.” Su Zhiyan tugged at Shen Nianjing’s cheeks with both hands. “We can’t stay in the school shopping street, people will see us.”

He felt like his mouth was swollen beyond recognition and he definitely couldn’t be seen by anyone.

Shen Nianjing looked down, his eyes falling on Su Zhiyan’s moist, red lips. He thought they really couldn’t let people see them like this.

He grabbed Su Zhiyan’s hands that were pinching his cheeks and put them in his pocket, interlacing their fingers inside the pocket. “Then let’s go eat at that barbecue place you really loved last time.”

They hailed a taxi outside school to go to a nearby mall.

Their hands were tightly clasped together, very similar to how they were in class that morning, but their mood and relationship were completely different now.

Su Zhiyan glanced sideways at their interlaced fingers and thought to himself that he really didn’t know what was good for him before.

He had actually said that the feeling of liking someone as a friend and loving someone romantically felt about the same…

He was taking that back now.

When he used to think his feelings for Shen Nianjing were just friendship, he felt uncomfortable even dreaming about intimate acts. But now that their relationship was out in the open, he just wanted to be closer to Shen Nianjing, even closer.

Whether it was the kiss just now or right now, he didn’t feel any discomfort at all. Instead he felt light and happy, completely excited.

Affection came in different forms. Friendship and love were two distinct emotions.

His hand was gently tugged, and Su Zhiyan turned his head to meet Shen Nianjing’s passionate, direct gaze.

    “What are you thinking about?”

Su Zhiyan smiled. “Thinking about everything you did to me.”

Shen Nianjing’s eyelids immediately drooped, his tone aggrieved. “I really didn’t mean to avoid you.”

    “We’ll talk at the restaurant.”

Su Zhiyan turned his head away, looking at the streets along the way.

Pedestrians and trees flew past quickly in his vision. Occasionally, he saw steaming roasted sweet potato stands and little shops selling tanghulu.

So winter streets could be this lively too.

The barbecue restaurant was still crowded at 2 PM, but they managed to find a relatively quiet booth.

While waiting for their food, Shen Nianjing pulled out two strawberry candies from his pocket and gave one to Su Zhiyan.

Su Zhiyan tore open the candy wrapper, revealing a pink, translucent fruit candy.

His eyes crinkled with amusement. “You always have so many strawberry-flavored things on you.”

Shen Nianjing smiled in a completely smitten way. “Yeah, they’re all prepared for you.”

    Su Zhiyan: “…”

Su Zhiyan felt his face heat up. He thought stubbornly to himself that Shen Nianjing must have fallen for him much earlier than he’d realized.

So what exactly had he been struggling with all this time?

It must be because Shen Nianjing’s feelings weren’t obvious enough!

He glared at the person across from him. “Then give me yours too.”

Shen Nianjing had just put it in his mouth, and his eyes lit up when he heard this. “Really?”

    Su Zhiyan: “…”

He felt like if he said “really,” the next second Shen Nianjing would kiss him right there in front of everyone.

“Ahem.” He coughed lightly and looked away. “We’re in public, it would be inappropriate.”

“So it’s okay in private?” Shen Nianjing’s eyes lit up again.

    Su Zhiyan: “…”

His heartbeat quickened as the corners of his mouth lifted slightly. “Maybe.”

Seeing Shen Nianjing’s eyes instantly get excited, he immediately changed the subject. “First tell me about that dream of yours!”

Although he probably couldn’t control his dreams on purpose, just like himself, from what Shen Nianjing said, Su Zhiyan guessed that Shen Nianjing’s dreams had actual content, completely different from his own vague experiences.

Shen Nianjing scratched his head, looking a bit guilty. “Do you remember that TV drama plot I mentioned to you before?”

That was the important turning point when realized Shen Nianjing was lying to him. Of course he remembered.

He hummed lightly. “I remember, and then?”

Shen Nianjing looked at him with incredibly sincere eyes.

“That plot was adapted from my dreams. I was the cannon fodder who got used by the villain and then killed.”

He said it straightforwardly, but Su Zhiyan was slightly stunned.

What did that have to do with him? He hadn’t broken any laws.

“You mean…” he drew out his tone, “you thought I was a murderer because of a dream, and then avoided me for almost a month???”

    Shen Nianjing: “…”

He hadn’t thought much of it before, after all, matters of life and death are serious business!

But somehow when it came out of Su Zhiyan’s mouth, it sounded so ridiculous…?

The kind of thing that could be on a “Walk into Science”1 TV show.

    His tone deflated. “Um…”

Then he quickly raised his right fist in a swearing gesture. “But later I realized how absurd I was being, so I was deeply remorseful and completely reformed myself with the determination to become a new person, so afterwards you can see…”

    “I’ve been… pretty good as a person, haven’t I?”

His way of putting it was a bit strange, making Su Zhiyan want to laugh, but he kept his mouth straight and continued asking, “Then why did you ignore me after you woke up in the hospital?”

“You even rolled your eyes at me!” He exaggerated indignantly.

Shen Nianjing felt even more guilty and quickly explained, “Because I had another dream after getting knocked out.”

Su Zhiyan raised an eyebrow lightly. So Shen Nianjing’s dreams weren’t limited by certain conditions like his own, but were… random?

“This dream was more detailed. I could see every person in it clearly.”

He paused, his expression turning complicated. “And the first thing you said to me when I woke up was exactly the same as in the dream.”

“I got scared, so I didn’t say anything.”

Su Zhiyan stared at him blankly, unsure what to make of it.

    A prophetic dream?

That shouldn’t be possible, since the dream version of him was nothing like reality.

    Then why was this happening?

Su Zhiyan had never even questioned the reality of this world when he was having his own dreams, but now after hearing Shen Nianjing’s words, he suddenly felt…

“Should we go look up some books or papers about metaphysics?” he said seriously.

    Shen Nianjing: “…”

“Research papers aren’t exactly scientific for this.” He objected, then thought about it and felt that wasn’t precise, so he immediately added, “Not that any of this is scientific to begin with.”

“In the dream, we were living inside a book.”

He frowned, carefully recalling. “But the setting and plot in the dream have absolutely nothing in common with our reality except for similar characters.”

Plus that dream world was downright criminal!

“I think…” he said hesitantly, “we really might be living in a book.”

Su Zhiyan rested his chin on his hand, studying Shen Nianjing intently.

“But it’s an incomplete book. Maybe it only gave us basic character settings like names and appearances.” Shen Nianjing spoke calmly despite the earth-shattering nature of his words. “Then the rest was filled in by the incomplete book’s imagination based on the real world.”

Su Zhiyan was silent for a long time.

    “Then are we even real?”

“Of course we are.” Shen Nianjing answered decisively, his tone leaving no room for doubt. “We completely generated our own blood and life from just a bit of character setting, and we have parents, family, and friends.”

“We have lives and experiences, full of all kinds of possibilities just like real people.”

“It’s just that in this world, the two of us became bugs.” His eyes held a hint of amusement.

After saying this, he suddenly remembered something and asked uncertainly, “So… what did you dream about?”

    “Was it really nightmares?”

Looking at Shen Nianjing’s serious, earnest expression that was like academic research, Su Zhiyan thought of all the romantic and intimate scenes from his dreams.

    Su Zhiyan: “……”

Hah, like hell I’ll tell you.

    Footnotes

    1. 走进科学 (Walk into Science) was a CCTV 'popular science' program in China famous for building up mysterious or paranormal events with dramatic narration, only to end with an ordinary explanation (like animals, wind, or human error). Because of this, the title later became a meme used jokingly whenever something seems mysterious at first glance, but the speaker suspects it will turn out anticlimactic.
